Smule VIP: Is the Subscription Worth It?

Smule is free to download, but a lot of the catalog and features sit behind a VIP subscription. Here's a clear breakdown of what you get at each level, what it costs, and how to decide whether upgrading makes sense for how you actually use the app.

What you get for free

The free tier is a genuine way to use Smule — not a crippled demo. You can record and share performances, join open duets, follow other singers, leave comments, and use a portion of the catalog without spending anything. For casual users who sing a few times a week and aren't particular about song selection, free is often enough.

The main constraints on the free tier are catalog access (many popular songs are VIP-only), ad interruptions between recordings, and a limited number of free song plays per month. You'll hit those limits faster than you might expect if you use the app daily.

The catalog is the biggest difference. Many of the most-requested songs — recent chart hits, popular duets, Disney catalog — are VIP-only. If you have a specific song in mind and it's locked, VIP is the only way to unlock it.

Profile customization

VIP members can fully customize their profile — background images, profile frame, and other visual options. Free accounts get a basic profile with limited customization. It's cosmetic, but it does affect how your profile reads to other singers browsing your page.

Vocal styles and effects

Smule's Style Studio features — including certain audio styles and Face FX options — are expanded for VIP users. The core pitch correction and reverb tools are available to everyone, but some of the more advanced processing options require a subscription.

What it costs

Smule VIP is available as a monthly or annual subscription, billed through the App Store or Google Play. The annual plan works out significantly cheaper per month than paying monthly. Pricing varies slightly by region — check the current rates in your local App Store or at Smule's VIP support page before subscribing.

Smule occasionally offers free trial periods for new subscribers. If you haven't subscribed before, check whether a trial is available before committing — it's the best way to evaluate VIP without spending anything.

Is VIP worth it?

Worth it if you...
  • Use Smule daily or several times a week
  • Care about singing specific popular songs
  • Find the ads disruptive to your sessions
  • Want to participate in artist sessions for VIP-only songs
  • Are building a presence and want a polished profile
Probably skip it if you...
  • Sing casually a few times a month
  • Are happy with the free catalog selection
  • Are still deciding whether Smule is right for you
  • Have access to a gifted VIP subscription from another user

The honest answer: if you're singing on Smule regularly, the catalog access alone usually justifies the annual subscription. If you're still feeling it out, stay free until you hit the walls — you'll know pretty quickly whether the upgrade makes sense.

VIP gifting

VIP subscribers can gift VIP status to other users directly within the app. This is a meaningful feature in Smule's community — experienced users sometimes gift VIP to newer singers they want to support, and it's a common way to reward someone after a particularly good collab.

To send a VIP gift: go to the recipient's profile, tap the gift icon, and select a VIP gift duration. The gifted period is added on top of any existing subscription the recipient has. You can also receive VIP as a gift even if you're on the free tier. Full details are on Smule's VIP Gifting help page.
